Glen D.'s Story

Life Studied mechanical drawing, surveying, and civil engineering immediately after LHS graduation. Met & married Christine Thomas (Winter Haven - WHHS - 69) in 1971/72 - Celebrated our 37th anniversary in June, 2009. Have 3 children & 1 grandson. Moved to Atlanta area in summer, '71 & began studying Bible, Theology, 'Urban Missions', & Sacred Literature; then served as a pastor (Christian Church/Church of Christ) for 18 years in Florida & Georgia (primarily in 'para-church' groups [prison ministry, street ministry, etc]). Supported self & family as a night auditor in the hotel industry while doing this. Began working as hotel bookkeeper (& management trainee) in 1987 & received an Accounting Degree from GA State University in 1997 - worked as a Regional Controller/ Accounting Mgr for Hilton Hotel Corp (former Promus Division)for several years and then moved to IHG Corporation (parent of Holiday Inn) as an accountant for Corporate Managed Hotels and then changed careers again due to the economic recession & turmoil of 2001 - 2002. Took a job with the State of Georgia and work as an Accountant in a maximum security women's prison SE of metro Atlanta. Strange environment in which to do accounting! Can sum up my life in the words of the Dead's Garcia: WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN! & Dylan's THE TIMES THEY ARE A'CHANGIN!. Like the Glimmer Twins say: "You can't always get what you want... but you sometimes get what you need." Can't wait to see what the remainder of the ride has in store! School Favorite teacher at LHS was Harvey Flatts - taught me to think creatively and out of the box as it were. Hated math - still struggle with it. High School taught me early on about various aspects of the garbage people will throw at you and want you to put up with - age & experience allows 1 to more effectively sort through such items to know what to deal with and what to simply ignore or move on from. Did have a lot of fun in interacting with various groups of people -the jocks, the 'car nuts', the music freaks, and the outcasts. College Initial college experience was very enlightening. Was an extremely liberal social activist with long hair and a beard and ended up in a very conservative religious school. Still have difficulties with former classmates and faculty in reconciling my political, social, & financial views with the religious aspects and approaches. Return to college in early 1990's in my 40's was an altogether different experience - went to a world class urban research institute while holding down a mid-level managerial professional job and taking classes full-time. Exposed me to a new generation of young thinkers and up and comers and caused me to re-examine some of my closely held opinions and beliefs - didn't change them all but changed some. Had a good time as an 'old man' in interacting with classmates young enough to be my children and do believe that we each taught the other something - lots of fun in class when instructors and professors would use examples from modern life (such as TV shows which I was completely clueless about [I watch very little tv and what I do watch is usually news, cultural or learning stations] and it created some unique interactions and reactions from my fellow classmates. One of my best times in 1st college experience was when I led a youth evangelistic team to Ohio during a spring revival meeting and one of the church elders there did not think it appropriate for a young, potential minister or pastor to lead services in his church while wearing a beard and long hair - re...Expand for more
ally good interaction when I went up behind the pulpit to remove the portrait of Jesus and stated something to the effect of 'come on buddy, they don't like people like us in this church...' 2nd college experience was enlightened one night when my graduate instructor gave me a failing grade when I left class early during a final exam (I was finished but he wanted all to stay until all were finished). Grade was later reversed on appeal - left early due to an 'important engagement previously arranged' - he didn't think tickets & backstage passes to the Voodo Lounge Atlanta Stop of the 94 Stones tour was more important than the final! Informed him that one must have their priorities in order and that I had not missed an Atlanta Stones tour stop since I first attended 1 here in 1972. Life goes on... Workplace Overall basic working career has been as a bookkeeper, accountant, etc (primarily in the hotel industry). Along the way have done stints as a bookkeeper for an asphalt/road construction company, worked with some rock groups in the early 70's as a road accountant, bridged the gap between manual to automated (computer) accounting systems in the hotel industry, and been instrumental in 1 major hotel company with bringing many of my ideas/concepts about operational level accounting into their new computerized system. This was what I did for about 25 years as a way to make a living while I did what I really loved. Spent much time as a religious worker specializing in the 'outcasts', prisoners, unwed mothers, drug addicts, street ministry, etc. Have met some great folks amongst the 'down & out' in our society as well as having met some folks who should be placed into a cage and NEVER, EVER let out while being treated humanely. Ultimately determined that I needed to spent some time concentrating on my working years to build some security and retirement ability. Now work for State of Georgia at Metro State Prison in SE Atlanta as a 'Business Operations Generalist (basically a flunky!). I oversee all purchasing, budget/finance items and ensure compliance with state regulations & laws as related to spending public tax funds in various ways. Have always hated bureaucrats and have now become one! Also do tax preparation for a major us tax prep firm during tax season (7 years now). Found that much of life is a cycle in that what goes around comes around. I have discovered that the old saying 'be careful of the feet you step on today because they may be connected to the --- you have to kiss tomorrow' is very true. Works both ways and I learned some hard lessons about being kind & gracious to ALL. All in all though, my late high school period motto "NON ILLIGITIMI CARBORUNDUM" is more and more applicable as I move through my journey. The motto of the House of Orange is also applicable: I REMAIN. Lost touch with my best friend from LHS, Tommy Green for over 20 years - recently reconnected due to the efforts of someone who knew him & was able to have 2 very good visits with TG when I had to come to Lakeland for family deaths. Very good to interact w/TG during trying times - looking forward to more visits in future. My best friends would tell you I'm loyal, hardworking, & grounded in reality, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a dreamer & crazy. Dress to be comfortable when not at work - dress at the basic level of professional attire (shirt & tie) while at work - am basically a jeans & t-shirt guy who hates to wear shoes. Won some state & regional championships for cooking chili & bar-b-que.
